Use and interpret

Choose the tone range and whether to show the dither pattern, then apply the page. Read the reported color depth and inspect the fixed 256-level pattern on the physical display.

Method and validation

The page reads Screen.colorDepth and renders a fixed 256-level-per-channel pattern. The visual pattern is only an observation aid; it does not switch the display's bit depth.

The result is available only when the browser exposes a numeric Screen.colorDepth. A manual observation describes what you see and is not converted into a native bit-depth verdict.

Scope and limitations

A web page cannot read the panel's native precision, internal LUT, FRC, dithering path, link format, or color-management pipeline. Browser and OS output settings can change the reported value.

What does this color-depth result report?

It reports Screen.colorDepth as exposed by the browser and shows a fixed 256-level visual pattern.

Can it prove a native 8-bit or 10-bit panel?

No. It cannot distinguish native precision from an output path, dithering, FRC, or browser and OS reporting.

What is the fixed pattern for?

It provides a controlled visual reference for tonal steps; it is not a selectable 6-, 8-, or 10-bit simulation.

Privacy and implementation
